In the high-powered world of competitive equestrian sports, the United States’ governing organization, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), in 2003, tasked the nation to develop a new organization that would oversee two (2) of equestrian sports’ top disciplines – the hunter and show jumping disciplines. Prior to this mandate, both disciplines were governed by separate entities – the American Horse Show Association (AHSA) had oversight of the hunter discipline and the United States Equestrian Team (USET) maintained oversight of the show jumping discipline.
The ultimate goal of the USEF’s mandate was to establish the first-ever affiliate that ‘jointly’ governed the nation’s top two (2) equestrian disciplines. Search committees from around the country identified several ideal potential ‘leaders’ within the sport while encouraging them to construct teams that would vie to become ‘the’ named affiliate for the country. One such leader was William H. Moroney, who put together a 16-person team – now known as the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Founding Board of Directors. One of the 16 Life Founding BOD members was Weinberg Harris & Associates (WHA) Partner, Tracey L. Weinberg.
Ms. Weinberg’s initial role on the Founding BOD, via WHA, was to create a name, brand identity for the group, and assist with the business development plan that ultimately would be presented to the USEF BOD. On July 8, 2004, the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) received formal recognition from the USEF as the “Official” National Affiliate for the hunter and jumper disciplines. Since its inception, the USHJA has grown exponentially to nearly 50,000 members, a full-time staff of 20, dozens of outsourced partners and vendors nationwide, and an operating budget of $3 million.
Weinberg’s and WHA’s role throughout the USHJA’s life-cycle includes: developing a name (USHJA) and corporate brand identity and collateral materials; developing the organization’s initial comprehensive sponsorship solicitation, procurement and management platform while exceeding sponsorship revenue goals by over 200%; and developing and executing the “Building For Growth” Capital Campaign designed to raise $6.5 m to underwrite the USHJA’s monumental milestone of building its own headquarters at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky – the epicenter of all equestrian sports.
WHA’s ability to provide in-depth knowledge of equestrian sports through Weinberg’s lifetime of equestrian competition at the highest level, coupled with its team of integrated marketing and development experts was the ‘perfect’ blend of capabilities that enabled WHA to help develop and propel a national governing body in perpetuity.
